The world of art is filled with hidden secrets. This exhibition presents a series of acrylic paintings that explore the concealed dimensions of artworks and archaeological artifacts through the lens of contemporary scientific research. Beneath the surface of every work of art lies a complex material history — layered strata of pigments, restorations, and alterations that document both the artist’s hand and the passage of time. In recent decades, advanced technologies have enabled access to these hidden narratives. Increasingly integrated into the work of museums around the world, these methods have become essential tools in the study of cultural heritage, contributing to a deeper understanding of painting techniques, the material history of archaeological artifacts, conservation and restoration processes, as well as the identification of forgeries.

In the body of works presented in this exhibition, Dr. Barkay examines the intersection between cultural heritage and scientific investigation, with particular emphasis on microscopy and imaging technologies capable of revealing what the human eye alone cannot perceive. Through acrylic painting, she translates scientific methods into visual metaphors, transforming scientific investigative tools into a unique artistic language. The paintings refer to contemporary techniques widely used in the scientific study of art, including X-ray radiography, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), infrared imaging, Raman spectroscopy, and various branches of microscopy.
