David (Dudu) Gerstein

David Gerstein was born on 1944 in Jerusalem. He is a world renowned painter and sculpture. Gerstein’s sculptures are made of laser-cut metal, which has been bent and painted, and features a colorful and lively character. The themes of his sculptures are inspired by the urban environment and its people, as well as from nature and vegetation. The works of Gerstein may appear at first to be a bit simplistic, neither topical, nor theatrical, but their simplicity is deceiving. Behind it, is an artist with a vast knowledge of art, its history, and the physical craft of painting. David Gerstein studied in the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design at the Department of Jewelry. For a time, he worked with figurative art, specialized in engraving and silk screen printing, illustrated children books, and won the Israel Museum Awards in Illustration. In the last few years, Gerstein developed a series of wall sculptures, characterized in strong imagery on multilayered metal cuts. His works were presented in many museums throughout Israel, and today are displayed around the world. After many years of wood cutting, Gerstein discovered the use of lasers, and started cutting metal pieces left-over from the automotive industry, and then painting them in strong colors. Since the end of the 90s, Gerstein has presented his works throughout the world, and is famous for, among other things, his outdoor sculptures. He published a series of works influenced by sports such as marathon, swimming and bicycling. Gerstein is also influenced by the urban landscape, nature and human behavior. Since the summer of 2013, Gerstein creates in a new workshop at Hartuv, by Jerusalem. Gerstein is the owner of two galleries in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and continues to display his works worldwide.
